Achill Field School

The Achill Archaeological Field School was founded in 1991 as a Training School for students of archaeology and anthropology. The Field School is based at the Achill Archaeology Centre in Dooagh and at the Deserted Village of Slievemore, both of which are located in the West of Ireland on Achill Island in County Mayo, Ireland.

Academic Credit for overseas students is provided by the National University of Ireland at Galway with whom the school has formal linkage.

The Achill Archaeological Field School , founded in 1991 is ideally situated to deliver courses in FieldTechnique tuition due to its close proximity to numerous sites of archaeological and historical interest spanning 5000 years. Also, as the oldest operational Field School in Ireland it has the benefit of past research and excavations to provide students with a comprehensive understanding in, and experience of Archaeological investigation and research.

Between 2008 and 2010, the Field School continued with the excavations at a group of Round Houses in Slievemore,  a Late Medieval house at Keem Bay and a Tranhumance Village at Annagh. The 2010 programme concentrated on excavations at Round House 2 and a group of smaller Roundhouses that sit on a platform downslope from RH1 and RH2. The associated prehistoric field systems were also examined with some surprising results.
