Course outline

A two week long introductory course in Archaeological Excavation and Field Surveying. This course is ideal for people wishing to have their first experience with archaeology outside of the class room or beyond the medium of books and television. It is suitable for undergraduates with little or no field experience or any body with an interest in archaeology that wants to experience the excitement of fieldwork for themselves.

In the first week students undertake a small excavation at an historic or prehistoric site at Keem Bay or Slievemore Mountain. This investigation covers all aspects of an archaeological excavation, beginning with removing the topsoil and overlying peat, carefully trowelling through the intact archaeological deposits, drawing sections across the wall, planning the trench, taking levels, taking archaeological photographs and filling in the written record.

In the second week students undertake a series of exercises in field surveying at a range of archaeological sites on Achill. The exercises include, drawing measured sketches, drawing measured plans, recording profiles using the level, preparing detailed fieldnotes, surveying with the EDM (Electronic Distance Meter) and recording using GPS units (Global Positioning Systems) .

Cost includes self-catering accommodation, local transport and one-day tour of archaeological sites on the island.
