Introductory Courses 2013
These courses seek to introduce participants to Irish archaeology in a practical way and can be taken by students and non-students alike - perfect for those with an abiding interest in the subject who seek hands-on experience. These courses include the 1-week Introduction to Irish Archaeology and the great-value 2-week Bare Bones course, both of which are offered as residential courses in April and August but which can also be arranged on a non-residential basis at any time from May to August.
Introduction to Irish Archaeology: 1-week course in excavation methodology
Dates: 15-19 April and 12-16 August 2013
These are beginners' courses for students looking for an introduction to practical aspects of archaeology, featuring a 'hands-on' approach in excavation methodology and recording procedures. The 1-week course includes tuition in excavation methods, using the Harris Matrix, stratigraphical interpretation, single context recording, planning, soil identification and analysis, data processing and lectures on research strategies. This course includes is a guided 1-day field trip to archaeological sites on Achill Island. Accommodation is available from Saturday to Saturday. Fees include tuition, self-catering accommodation and local transport.
Bare Bones: 2-week course in excavation and survey methodology
Dates: 15-26 April and 12-23 August 2013
The Bare Bones course includes tuition in excavation methods, using the Harris Matrix, stratigraphical interpretation, single context recording, planning, soil identification and analysis, data processing, introduction to AutoCAD and GIS, plus lectures on research strategies. This course includes two guided 1-day field trips to archaeological sites on Achill Island. Accommodation is available from Saturday to Saturday. Fees include tuition, self-catering accommodation and local transport.
