Archaeology: Puzzles and Probabilities

This specially designed course provides an introduction to archaeological procedures and methods. Through a series of enjoyable interactive tutorials, the intricacies of archaeological excavation and analysis are explained. The course covers the way in which excavations are conducted, the principles of site stratigraphy, the methods through which sites are dated, the methods by which pottery and bones are analysed, the process of reconstructing a site from the archaeological remains and the way in which an archaeologist interprets the landscape.

 


Each part of the course is accompanied by a hands on demonstration in which the participants resolve a particular archaeological conundrum.

- Principles of Site Stratigraphy

- Dating Techniques and what the dates actually mean

- Analysing Ceramic and Bone Assemblages

- Interpreting and Reconstructing an excavated site

- Reading the Landscape from an Archaeologists point of view
