Our Autumn Break programme welcomes the participation of both groups and individuals, but numbers are limited so early booking is advised.

The 10-Day Spring Break will include tuition, local transport and self-catering accommodation. Self-catering accommodation means participants will share a fully equipped house and do their own cooking either individually or as a group.

PROGRAMME 10-DAY Autumn BREAK
DAY 1: Introductory Lectures and guided tour of the archaeology of Slievemore
DAY 2: Excavation at Boycott's House overlooking Keem Bay and/or at unclassified megalithic tomb on Slievemore
Evening Lecture: Mesolithic and Neolithic Archaeology in Ireland
Day 3: Excavation at Boycott's House overlooking Keem Bay and/or at unclassified megalithic tomb on Slievemore
Evening Lecture: Bronze Age and Iron Age Archaeology in Ireland
Day 4: Excavation at Boycott's House overlooking Keem Bay
Evening Lecture: Early Medieval and Viking Archaeology in Ireland and/or at unclassified megalithic tomb on Slievemore
Day 5: Excavation at Boycott's House overlooking Keem Bay and/or at unclassified megalithic tomb on Slievemore
Evening Lecture: Medieval and Post Medieval Archaeology in Ireland
Day 6: Field Survey at a Post Medieval Village, including EDM survey, GPS survey,
Photographic Survey and Written Survey
Evening Lecture:Bog Bodies in Irish Archaeology
Day 7: The Clew Bay Archaeological Trail. A tour of the fascinating archaeological sites
along the southern side of Clew Bay including a climb to the top of the most
sacred of Irish mountains, Croagh Patrick
Day 8: Digitising the field record. A day in the computer lab using AutoCAD to digitise
the field drawings and converting field notes into an archaeological account of
the excavations and survey that were undertaken
Day 9: Ceramic idenfication and / or drawing archaeological finds
Day 10: Guided tour of sites in County Mayo

SPECIAL SOCIAL EVENT WITH THE COMPLIMENTS OF The Field School e.g. Irish Music Session and complimentary drink in a local PUB/HOTEL

Sessions are run by arrangement so you can plan your flights and ground transportation accordingly

Strong Hiking Boots and wet weather gear e.g. waterproof jacket and pants are essential.
In the event of inclement weather, always a possibility on Achill Island, indoor activities such as finds processing, artefact drawing, and matrix construction, compiling a context sheet and Inking-in plus an in-house lecture will be substituted for outdoor activities listed on the syllabus. The fees for the 7 and 10 day programmes include tuition, materials, self-catering accommodation and local transport. The school bus will collect students from Westport Railway Station on arrival and also transport them back there again at the end of the programme. Internet (Wifi) and email access for students will be available from 6 – 10 pm daily.
