Spring/Autumn Breaks 2010

The Achill Archaeological Field School, based on Achill Island off Irelands west coast, has for over nineteen years been a major provider of training and educational programmes for archaeologists and anthropologists. The Field School was established to address the very real need for ‘hands-on’ archaeological training for students of archaeology and anthropology. To this core component was added introductory academic courses in Irish and British archaeology, all of which are accredited by the National University of Ireland at Galway.

Following on from our success when the Achill Archaeological Field School successfully played host to students groups from Cornell, the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee and Franklin Pierce from New Hampshire, the 2010 Autumn Break programme will include first-class tuition in excavation and survey methodology at the Deserted Village at Slievemore and at a nearby Bronze Age round house.

The 2010 programme will involve the digital survey and excavation of a Bronze Age Roundhouse c. 2000 B.C. and a Late Medieval Deserted Village c. 1700 A.D. Included in this programme will be a guided tour of premier archaeological sites in County Mayo and the Museum of Country Life in Castlebar. There will also be an opportunity for students to pursue limited ethnographic research during their stay.

The Field Schools infrastructure includes a modern laboratory and lecture room, a computer network, study area, extensive library and dormitory accommodation, field and laboratory equipment together with the resident expertise in technical training that identifies the Achill Archaeological Field School as the ideal institution to offer international students a comprehensive program dealing with Irish Prehistoric and Historic archaeology.

The Field School is interested in discussing and developing a semester long collaborative programme with a North American University to provide training in archaeological methodology for undergraduate students.
